In the backyard of her parents' house

She sat in a swing

While her best friend pushed her

Because they did everything together

And they played together

And they were never apart from each other

Except when they had to go home

And her mother would always give them

Cookies and milk

That was the year her mom

Took both of them to Disney World

And let them ride all the rides

And she got her first bike

With pink ribbons on the handlebars

And her parents never got angry with each other

And they always gave her new toys

And always had the money to do it

In the backyard of her best friend's house

She sat in a swing

While her best friend had snuck out

And went to see a movie

With a guy in their class

While she was stuck watching her little brother

Who smelt kind of strange

That was the year her mom

Began doing drugs

And left her alone with her dad

And her friends started calling her names

Even though it really bothered her

And her parents were always angry

And they never bought her new toys

And used the money for her mother's addiction

In the backyard of her father's house

She sat in a swing

While nobody pushed her

Because she no longer had a best friend

And she was always alone

And everyone looked at her funny

And ignored her

Even though she was the smartest girl in the class

That was the year her mother

Finally got out of rehab

And had a relapse

And her parents had gotten a divorce

And she had to live with her dad

Because the court deemed her mother an unfit parent

And she still didn't get new toys

And instead the money was used for bills

That's why in the backyard of her own house

She sat in a swing

While her kids pushed her

And she pushed them

To do their best

And not to end up like their grandma

Who had died of an overdose

The day of her wedding

And never got the chance

To see what she would become

Someone that she should be proud of
