Under Armour started out as a simple idea to make a T-shirt that wouldn’t hold moisture. No Sweat!

Under Armour was founded by Kevin Plank, a student at the University of Maryland. Kevin Plank founded Under Armour in 1996. As soon as this brand was created it caught the attention of athletes and coaches worldwide.

In the already clogged sporting goods market,Under Armour’s biggest rival is Nike. Nike was founded by Philip Knight who attended the University of Maryland. Philip Knight founded Nike in 1964. Whenever Maryland and Oregon play each other, it is Nike vs. Under Armour. Unlike Adidas, Puma, Reebok, Wilson etc. it would seem that the more important sports brands tend to tie themselves to universities. While the University of Maryland will remain the home school of Under Armour, there are currently 27 other colleges and 38 high schools.

While Under Armour started as a clothing company, they have entered the shoe market as of 2006 and today Under Armour has become the official footwear provider for the MLB. Under Armour’s sponsorship flows to the individual athletes as well. Rising to the ranks of Adidas and Nike, Under Armour has picked up Tom Brady, Ray Lewis and Cam Newton as athletes. However, the list of athletes grows everyday.

Under Armour tends to be pricey, with shoes cost around sixty to one hundred twenty dollars, and Under Armour clothes cost around fifty to one hundred forty dollars. Under Armour also makes clothing that keeps you warm and dry in cold weather, the clothing is called Cold Gear.

As a result, Under Armour has had an amazing, short career thus far, and has more exciting products to come in the following years. Under Armour also wants to expand the number of stores, so that you can buy their product directly from them. As for now we can see the impact of Under Armour, simply from their profits.  In 2009 alone Under Armour grossed over $850 million.
